The journey

West along the A1, which runs from Vilnius through Kaunas to the port city of Klaipėda on the Baltic, motorway for most of the way. Ferries cross from the city to Smiltynė on the Curonian Spit: the Old Ferry for foot passengers and the New Ferry for cars.

Arriving at Kaunas Airport

Kaunas Airport is at Karmėlava, north-east of Kaunas, next to the A6 road, which links to Lithuania's main motorways. Ryanair is the main airline and has had a base here since 2010, so many passengers are heading on to Vilnius as well as to Kaunas. There is a single terminal, with arrivals on the ground floor. Your driver waits in the arrivals area with your name.

• If you are flying in for Vilnius, this is a common alternative airport; the A6 joins the A1 to the capital near Kaunas, so it is a straightforward transfer.
• The terminal is small, with one arrivals area on the ground floor — you will see your driver as soon as you come through.

Maps says 131 minutes. That is the driving. Door to door from the moment you land is a different number, and it is the one worth planning around.

Realistically, 161 to 206 minutes after landing. If someone is waiting for you, that is the number to give them.

When to book

How much luggage can I take?

One suitcase and one piece of hand luggage per passenger is included. Skis or a snowboard, a golf bag, a surfboard or a bicycle: add them when you book, so a vehicle with room for them is sent (there is a small charge, shown before you pay). An unusual number of ordinary bags: tell us in the notes.

Can I get a child seat?

Yes. Choose it when you book: infant seat (0–12 months), child seat (1–4 years) or booster seat (4–12 years). There is a small charge per seat, shown before you pay. Where the law requires a child seat, travelling without one is not possible.

Who will drive me?

A licensed local transport company that works with Airportlink. We check its operating licence and insurance before it can take bookings, and again when they expire. The day before, you receive the driver's name, phone number and vehicle.

Can I book the return from Klaipėda to the airport?

Yes. Add the return when you book, or book it on its own later, also at a fixed price. For pick-ups away from the airport the driver waits 15 minutes free from the booked time.

When do I pay?

When you book, or — on many transfers — later: you book without paying, your card is stored securely with Stripe and charged 48 hours before pick-up. You are told the exact amount and date when you book.
