The airport
Shannon is twenty-four kilometres west of Limerick and was built where the transatlantic flying boats used to land. It is still the main entry point for the west of Ireland and has US preclearance, which means you clear American immigration here rather than on arrival. One terminal, a short walk from the gate to the door, and a driver waiting with your name in the arrivals hall.
- US preclearance means you go through American immigration before boarding. Allow three hours for departures to the States, not two.
- This is the closest airport to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, and the reason most people land here rather than in Dublin.
- The roads west of Ennis narrow quickly. Journey times in the Burren and around Doolin are longer than the distance suggests.
