The journey
Nine kilometres across the lagoon, fifteen minutes. Cagliari climbs from the port to the Castello district, and the old streets up there are too narrow and too steep for a car — the drop-off is at the foot of the walls, and the lift does the rest.
Arriving at Cagliari Airport
Elmas is nine kilometres from Cagliari, on the edge of a lagoon where flamingos feed. Sardinia is bigger than people expect — the beaches on the Costa Rei are an hour away, and the north of the island is four.
- Nine kilometres to the city, fifteen minutes. The train to Cagliari Centrale takes seven and runs every twenty.
- Sardinia is 270 kilometres long. Check the distance to your hotel before assuming it is close.
- In August the coast roads to Villasimius and Chia slow considerably from mid-morning.
How long it really takes
Maps says 15 minutes. That is the driving. Door to door from the moment you land is a different number, and it is the one worth planning around.
Realistically, 45 to 90 minutes after landing. If someone is waiting for you, that is the number to give them.
When to book
