Before you land

The island is longer than it looksCagliari is at the southern tip. Olbia and the Costa Smeralda are four hours north by road. If your hotel is up there, flying into Olbia is the better plan.

Flamingos at the runwayThe Molentargius wetland sits between the airport and the city, and the flamingos are there most of the year. You see them on the approach.

Beaches, and the road to themVillasimius is sixty-six kilometres east on a coast road that narrows and winds. Chia is sixty south, and the last stretch is the same. Both are worth the drive; neither is quick.

The airport

Elmas is nine kilometres from Cagliari, on the edge of a lagoon where flamingos feed. Sardinia is bigger than people expect — the beaches on the Costa Rei are an hour away, and the north of the island is four.

Nine kilometres to the city, fifteen minutes. The train to Cagliari Centrale takes seven and runs every twenty.
Sardinia is 270 kilometres long. Check the distance to your hotel before assuming it is close.
In August the coast roads to Villasimius and Chia slow considerably from mid-morning.
