Before you land
The €55 fixed taxi fare, and where it stopsRome caps the airport taxi fare to the historic centre. It is a good deal if that is where you are going. Outside the walls — Trastevere south of Viale Trastevere, the Vatican museums area, Monteverde — the cap does not apply and the meter runs. Our price is the same wherever inside the city you are heading.
Two roads in, and both fill upThe A91 and the Via Portuense both feed into the centre and both queue between 07:00 and 09:30. The GRA ring road adds fifteen minutes but often saves more. Your driver decides on the day; the fare does not change either way.
Cruise passengers going to CivitavecchiaSeventy kilometres north, about an hour, and the road is straightforward. Book it as a transfer rather than a taxi — the taxi meter on that route is unpredictable and there is no fixed fare.
The airport
Fiumicino sits thirty kilometres from the centre, on the coast. Terminal 3 handles almost all international arrivals, and the walk from the far gates to the taxi rank is longer than most people expect — allow twenty minutes from wheels down to the kerb.
- Terminal 3 for international arrivals, Terminal 1 for Italian and short-haul Schengen. The two are ten minutes apart on foot.
- The taxi fare to the centre is fixed by the city at €55, but that covers the historic centre only. Anywhere outside the Aurelian walls and the meter starts again.
- The Leonardo Express runs to Termini in thirty-two minutes. It is fast, but Termini is not where most hotels are, and the second leg with luggage is the part nobody plans for.
