Before you land

Etna, and the road up itForty-five kilometres to Rifugio Sapienza, an hour with the climb. The cable car goes higher. Eruptions close the road occasionally and the closure is decided that morning.

Taormina sits above the seaSixty kilometres north, and the town is three hundred metres up a hairpin road. Cars stop at Porta Messina; the centre is pedestrian.

The airport

Fontanarossa is seven kilometres from Catania, with Etna filling the view to the north. It is the busiest airport in Sicily and the arrivals hall is small for the traffic it takes.

Etna excursions leave from Rifugio Sapienza, at 1,900 metres. The road up closes in snow.
