Before you land

The trulli at AlberobelloSixty kilometres, an hour. Fifteen hundred conical stone houses, and the town is a UNESCO site. Parking is at the edge and the centre is walked.

Matera is in another regionSeventy kilometres west, over the border into Basilicata. The sassi — cave dwellings carved into the ravine — were inhabited until the 1950s.
