Before you land

A city on a slopeGenoa runs uphill from the port. Many addresses are reached by lift or funicular rather than road. Tell us the street and we will say where the car can stop.

Portofino, and the road inForty kilometres east, but forty-five minutes — the coast road is single-lane in places and busy in summer. Cars are restricted in the village itself.

The Cinque Terre from the westNinety-five kilometres, an hour and a half. Most people come from La Spezia, but from Genoa you reach Monterosso first, which is the least crowded of the five.

The airport

Cristoforo Colombo is built on reclaimed land in the harbour, seven kilometres from the centre. Genoa is squeezed between mountains and sea, and the roads reflect it — tunnels, viaducts and very little flat ground.

Seven kilometres to the centre, fifteen minutes.
Portofino is forty kilometres east and the last stretch is narrow.
The old town is the largest medieval centre in Europe and most of it is too narrow for cars.
