Before you land

The coast road, and the motorwayThe A29 runs inland and is quick. The old coast road through Isola delle Femmine is slower and much better looking. Tell the driver if you would rather see it — the fare is the same.

Cefalù without going through PalermoEighty-five kilometres east, and the route bypasses the city entirely. A transfer straight from the airport saves an hour against going in and out again.

The temples at AgrigentoA hundred and thirty kilometres south, two hours across the middle of the island. Long, but the Valley of the Temples is one of the great Greek sites and the road there is empty.

The airport

Punta Raisi sits on a strip of land between the mountains and the sea, thirty-five kilometres west of Palermo. The approach is spectacular and the drive in follows the coast most of the way.

Thirty-five kilometres to the city, about forty minutes on the A29.
The Trinacria Express train runs to Palermo Centrale in an hour, but only once or twice an hour.
For Cefalù or the west coast, going straight from the airport saves doubling back through the city.
