The journey
Two hundred and thirty-four kilometres south on the A1, two and a half hours. Long enough that the train is usually the better choice — but for a family with luggage, or an arrival after the last connection, the door-to-door price is fixed and there is no changing platforms at Termini.
Arriving at Rome Fiumicino Airport
Fiumicino sits thirty kilometres from the centre, on the coast. Terminal 3 handles almost all international arrivals, and the walk from the far gates to the taxi rank is longer than most people expect — allow twenty minutes from wheels down to the kerb.
- Terminal 3 for international arrivals, Terminal 1 for Italian and short-haul Schengen. The two are ten minutes apart on foot.
- The taxi fare to the centre is fixed by the city at €55, but that covers the historic centre only. Anywhere outside the Aurelian walls and the meter starts again.
- The Leonardo Express runs to Termini in thirty-two minutes. It is fast, but Termini is not where most hotels are, and the second leg with luggage is the part nobody plans for.
How long it really takes
Maps says 150 minutes. That is the driving. Door to door from the moment you land is a different number, and it is the one worth planning around.
Realistically, 180 to 225 minutes after landing. If someone is waiting for you, that is the number to give them.
When to book
Booking early costs the same as booking late — the price does not move. What moves is whether there is a car left.
