The journey
Sixty-five kilometres north, up the M23 and around part of the M25. The drive is straightforward but the last few kilometres into central London are the slow part, and the time varies more than the distance suggests. Door to door with luggage, it compares well with the train plus a taxi at the other end.
Arriving at Gatwick Airport
Gatwick has two terminals, North and South, joined by a free shuttle that runs every few minutes. It sits south of London near Crawley, which makes it the natural airport for Brighton and the south coast — and a longer drive into London than most visitors expect. The M23 into the M25 is the route, and both can be slow.

- Gatwick to central London is sixty-five kilometres, not the short hop the name suggests. Allow well over an hour at busy times.
- For Brighton and the coast, Gatwick is the closer airport by a wide margin — forty minutes, against two hours from Heathrow.
