The journey
An hour and ten minutes east over the Pennines on the M62. The train is a reasonable alternative if you are travelling light, but it means a change at Piccadilly with your luggage; the car is a single step from the arrivals hall.
Arriving at Manchester Airport
Manchester is the biggest airport outside London and the natural gateway to the north-west, to the Lake District and to north Wales. It has three terminals joined by a covered walkway and a skylink, and the arrivals halls are separate — the terminal on your booking is where your driver waits.
- Terminals 1, 2 and 3 have their own arrivals halls. The walk between them is covered but long with luggage.
- The M56 into the city is quick outside peak hours; between 07:30 and 09:30 it is not.
- For the Lake District, Manchester is the closest major airport — under two hours to Windermere.
