The journey
Forty minutes west, straight down the M4. Reading is the gateway to the Thames Valley and a frequent destination for technology and pharmaceutical visitors. There is a coach from Heathrow, but it takes over an hour and leaves you at the station rather than at your hotel or office.
Arriving at Heathrow Airport
Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe and has four terminals spread over a large site, connected by free transfers that still take time. Terminals 2 and 3 sit together in the middle; Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 are several minutes away by train or road. The terminal is what decides where your driver meets you, so it matters more here than almost anywhere else.
- Give your terminal when you book. A driver waiting at Terminal 5 cannot reach Terminal 3 quickly, and the free inter-terminal train adds fifteen minutes.
- The M4 and M25 around Heathrow are slow between 07:00 and 09:30 and again from 16:00. A journey that takes forty minutes at noon can take ninety at six in the evening.
- Heathrow charges every vehicle that stops at the terminal a drop-off fee. It is included in our price, and it is worth checking whether a quote you compare includes it.
How long it really takes
Maps says 40 minutes. That is the driving. Door to door from the moment you land is a different number, and it is the one worth planning around.
Realistically, 70 to 115 minutes after landing. If someone is waiting for you, that is the number to give them.
When to book
Booking early costs the same as booking late — the price does not move. What moves is whether there is a car left.
