Before you land

Four terminals, and the one you land at changes everythingTerminals 2 and 3 share one arrivals area; Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 are separate buildings a few minutes away. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall of the terminal on your booking, with your name. If your airline changes terminal, tell us — it takes a minute and saves a lost half hour.

Central London is not one placeFrom Heathrow, Paddington is twenty-seven kilometres and the City is closer to forty. Traffic makes more difference than distance: the same address can be forty minutes on a Sunday morning and ninety on a Friday evening. A fixed price does not change with the traffic, which is the whole point of booking ahead.

The airport

Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe and has four terminals spread over a large site, connected by free transfers that still take time. Terminals 2 and 3 sit together in the middle; Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 are several minutes away by train or road. The terminal is what decides where your driver meets you, so it matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Give your terminal when you book. A driver waiting at Terminal 5 cannot reach Terminal 3 quickly, and the free inter-terminal train adds fifteen minutes.
The M4 and M25 around Heathrow are slow between 07:00 and 09:30 and again from 16:00. A journey that takes forty minutes at noon can take ninety at six in the evening.
