Stansted is a single terminal in Essex, about sixty-five kilometres north-east of central London and much closer to Cambridge than the name suggests. It is the busiest airport in Britain for low-cost flights, which means very early departures and very late arrivals — the hours when public transport is thinnest.

Cambridge is forty-six kilometres away, against sixty-five to central London. For Cambridge, Stansted is the airport that makes sense.
Arrivals here are heavily concentrated late at night. The coach still runs, but the last trains and the local taxi supply thin out.
