Before you land

A single terminal, and a quick road outOne arrivals hall, one exit, and the motorway within minutes. It is one of the easiest airports in Britain to leave — which is why so many Highland trips start here rather than in the city.

The Old Town problemMany hotels in the Old Town sit on streets that cars cannot enter, or can only enter from one direction. A driver who knows Edinburgh stops at the closest legal point and walks the bags across; a stranger with a meter running does not.

The airport

Edinburgh Airport is a single terminal eight miles west of the city, close to the M8 and M9. It is the busiest airport in Scotland and the starting point for most visits to the Highlands, to St Andrews and to the whisky country north of the Forth.

The city centre is twenty-five minutes away, but during the Festival in August the last stretch through the West End can double that.
Old Town streets are narrow, steep and often closed to traffic. Give the hotel name and the driver will get as close as the road allows.
For the Highlands, leaving straight from the airport saves a wasted afternoon in the city.
