The Metro under the terminalIt is genuinely convenient — twenty-five minutes to the city centre — and for someone with a backpack it is the right answer. With two suitcases and a hotel three streets from the station, less so.

The airport for Durham and the WallDurham, Hexham and the Roman sites along Hadrian's Wall are all within an hour. Public transport reaches them, but with changes; a car makes the first day of a walking holiday start on time.

The airport

Newcastle Airport is six miles from the city and connected to it by the Metro, which makes it one of the simplest arrivals in England. It serves the north-east, Northumberland and the Scottish border country, and it is the closest airport to Hadrian's Wall.

Durham is half an hour away and has no airport of its own — most visitors to the cathedral and the university land here.
The Metro runs from under the terminal, but it stops at stations, not at hotels.
For Northumberland and the coast, a car from the airport saves a change and a wait.
